2015 Historic Bremen Calendars Now Available

by RT Henke on November 13, 2014

“A Legacy of Bremen Student Art” is the theme for the 2015 Historic Bremen Calendar.  The Calendar features ten (10) of the large murals painted by 25 Bremen High School students during the 1950s and 60s. These murals were originally in the cafeteria and later in the hallways of the elementary school. Last summer the paintings were transferred to the Bremen History Center by the Bremen Schools.  This calendar should bring back many memories for past Bremen students and also make great gifts for friends and family.

Calendars are available for $15 and are on sale at the Bremen History Center, Koontz Hardware, Town Hall, Woodies Super Market, Don Schneider’s Barber Shop, Hospital Gift shop and Custom Framing Solutions.  They can also be ordered from Historic Bremen, Inc. P.O. Box 471, Bremen, IN 46506 (add $2 for mailing).  Make checks payable to Historic Bremen, Inc.

2015 Historic Bremen Calendars Brings Back Memories
Remember those large murals on the walls in the Elementary School.  Those murals are now featured in the 2015 Historic Bremen Calendar. The painting of these murals by students was a project directed by Miss Justine Baker who taught both music and art to all 12 grades.  Miss Baker selected both the subject for the murals and the students to produce the paintings.

The students were given pictures of the characters to aid them in sketching and painting the mural.  The students painted the large murals in the School Cafeteria where they were placed on display.  Each mural when completed was signed by the students creating the picture.  Later the paintings were moved from the cafeteria to the hallway in the Elementary School building. In the summer of 2014, ten (10) of these murals were transferred to the Bremen History Center by the Bremen Schools.  Three (3) of the paintings are on display in the History Center.  The remaining seven (7) were placed on the walls in the meeting room of the Senior Building in the front part of the building where the History Center is located. These ten (10) paintings were completed by a total of 25 students.  All the paintings can be viewed by visiting the Bremen History Center.   Part of Miss Baker’s legacy is the many students who continued to make the arts a part of their lives.

When the murals arrived at the History Center they were photographed by Keith Board.  His photographs are those featured in this calendar.  Missing from the original student art collection is the eleventh mural, Dumbo. The Bremen History Center would like a picture of this mural so all 11 are documented for the future.

The 2015 calendar also has a picture of “Leo the Lion” who has also taken up residence at the History Center.
