Bremen Pool 50th Anniversaryby Brian Main on April 30, 2014
After one of the coldest and snowiest winters on record, temperatures are finally rising and alas, the grass is greening and trees are blooming. With Spring finally upon us, it may seem a bit premature to be focusing on summer plans, but our Parks and Recreation Department can't seem to help it! While Bremen Parks will continue to play host to nearly a dozen sports leagues this summer, along with events like the Firemen's Festival and the Kids Triathlon, Park Superintendent Brian Main says the park has a few tricks of its own up its sleeve this year. "Since taking over last Summer, I've wanted to create opportunities for families to enjoy our parks in new ways," Main says.
When the pool opens on Saturday June 7th, area residents will have an opportunity to do just that. "2014 marks the 50th year of operation for our pool; on opening day we'll be celebrating those 50 years and diving into the 2014 pool season." For those of you checking your math, you're correct; the pool has been around for 51 years, but renovations in 2004 closed the pool for one season.
The Parks and Recreation Department is planning a one-day pool celebration and promising fun for area residents. The event, which will be held from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on June 7th at the Community Pool will feature a day's worth of free swimming, a cannonball competition, free food, music, games, and giveaways. "We'd also really like to get together as many former pool employees as we can for a photo to help commemorate those 50 years." With roughly 15 employees each summer, the past employee photo, which will be taken at 1:00 pm could create quite a gathering. "That would be great," Main added "maybe we'll have to take two pictures!"
The Parks Department will also be posting historic pool pictures on its Facebook page leading up to the June 7th celebration. See how many pool employees from years past you can identify! In addition to the 50 Year Celebration, the pool and its staff will continue to serve the Bremen community this year through the following programs:
