Bremen School Board Meeting - 9/2/14

by Amy Wenger on September 4, 2014

The 2014-15 school year may still be in its formative phases, but students and staff across the district have already been exceptionally busy with scholastic and athletic pursuits.  Bremen Elementary-Middle School principal Larry Yelaska and Bremen High School principal Bruce Jennings offered detailed reports of the various activities that have been engaging their schools during a meeting of the Bremen Public Schools Board of School Trustees held on Tuesday, September 2.

A special presentation from BEMS faculty members Sabrina Wickens, Matt Moyer, and Megan Bules was among the highlights of Yelaska's slate of events.  The trio spent a week at the campus of Purdue University over the summer, learning and training about the specifics of the TechFit Club.  This new organization is being launched at the school this year, with Wickens and Moyer serving as sponsors for this motivational adventure focusing on the importance and awareness of youth fitness.

Yelaska also noted that next Saturday, the employees of Bremen Public Schools will be given the opportunity to participate in a continuation of a program called "Active Shooter," shared by the Bremen Police Department.  The first workshop was held in August, during the first day that teachers were in session, and the second course will take place from 8:30 a.m. until noon on September 13.

A number of middle school sports teams have hit the ground running, and are off to impressive starts.  The cross country team has a combined total of 65 runners this year, with the boys and girls each placing third at the Wawasee Invitational held last week.  The 7th and 8th grade football team will travel to New Prairie on September 9 to begin their season, with 15 members representing the younger team and 33 on the 8th grade roster.  That same day will mark the debut of the ten young ladies who will be demonstrating their skills on the cheerleading squad.  Also on September 9, the 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams will take on Jimtown, with eight members on the 7th grade team and nine in grade 8.

In the report submitted by Jennings, enrollment figures for the Bremen High School student body, as of August 28, were released.  There are currently 112 freshmen, 131 sophomores, 122 juniors, and 142 seniors.  The latter total also reflects four exchange students and several fifth year seniors.  That places the total number of students attending classes at BHS at 507 for the 2014-15 school year.

Some noteworthy dates on the school calendar include an upcoming appearance by the high school band at the Purdue football game, scheduled for Saturday, September 6.  Information night for seniors and their parents will be held on Monday, September 8 at 6:30 p.m. in Bowen Auditorium.  The band heads back out on the road Saturday, September 13 for a contest in Goshen.  Monday, September 17 kicks off Homecoming Week, which culminates in the football game to be held on Friday, September 19, when the Lions host Culver.

Elections were also held for class officers, with the following chosen to lead their classes this year:  Freshmen - President, Aaron Brooke; Vice-President, Araceli Jiminez; Secretary, Alexander Stealy; and Treasurer, Natalie Gutierez.  Sophomores - President, Hudson Thornton; Vice-President, Ivy Enamorado; Secretary, Liz Lawmaster; and Treasurer, Grant Klockow.  Juniors - President, Ben Nick; Vice-President, Josh Dani; Secretary, Jon Dani; and Treasurer, Andrew Cullers.  Seniors - President, Kris Wickens; Vice-President, Sam Lacher; Secretary, Danny Reynoso; and Treasurer, Gabriel Fear.

Other issues that required board action included the approval of the 2014-15 Master Contract for teachers of the Bremen Public Schools system.  A request to bestow an honorary degree for a longtime resident of the community was given a nod as well, with Aldean Laidig Feldman being the recipient of the award.  The Bremen High School music department was granted permission to attend an out-of-state weekend trip to Chicago on the dates of Friday, May 22 through Monday, May 25.
