Drivers Beware - School Opens August 18by Matt Hassel on August 7, 2014
School opens Monday, August 18, and the Bremen Police Dept., in cooperation with the Bremen Public Schools would like to remind motorists to be especially careful and watch for children on their way to and from school.
According to Chief Matthew Hassel, there will be an increase in child pedestrian and motor traffic Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 7:30 am to 8:00 am and 7:55 am to 8:25 am on Thursday. Also 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm Monday thru Friday. "It's up to us to look out for these youngsters because they are not thinking much about safety, they are too excited."
Passing a school bus, speeding in school zones, stopping in the roadway to load or unload children, high traffic volumes and rolling thru stop signs, these are all factors that lead to school children becoming injured or killed and the risks are even greater while school is in session. About 756,000 children are expected to ride Hoosier school buses this year. Many children board school buses in the pre-dawn hours and it can be difficult for drivers to see them in the dark. On average, 26 children are killed every year while getting on or off a school bus or while waiting at the bus stop, according to the Indiana Department of Transportaion LaPorte District. Nearly 27,000 youngsters under the age of 15 lose their lives or suffer injuries in motor vehicle crashes each year, according to AAA-Chicago Motor Club. Traffic crashes lead all causes of death and injury among youngsters through age 14. Nearly 20% of the traffic fatalities that occur in the 0-14 age group are accidents involving pedestrians.
Crossing guards will be located at Plymouth and Montgomery, Plymouth and Marshall, Plymouth and Baltimore, Bowen and Sherman, and South St., in front of the elementary, to assist children crossing the street. Motorists are asked to use extreme caution at these intersections and to obey the crossing guard's lawful instructions.
Again there will be NO LEFT TURNS at the intersections of Plymouth and Marshall and Plymouth and Baltimore Streets for westbound traffic on Plymouth St. while the crossing guards are on duty. This should reduce traffic back ups and increase safety at these intersections.
Drivers can help protect children by being especially careful near schools and in residential areas, pulling to the curb to load and unload children, watching their speed, obeying school bus signals and crossing guards.
Remember, school opens August 18, - Please drive carefully.
