Race For Education at BEMSby Amy Wenger on May 18, 2014
Students of Bremen Elementary-Middle School will certainly be kicking up the dust along the perimeter of Bunge Field on Monday, May 19, as they blaze around the track for the fifth annual "Race for Education" event. The children will be running at various intervals throughout the day, earning pledge dollars which will be used to benefit their school.
The objective is to see how many times the students can run, walk, or jog around the quarter mile track in one hour. That number will be used to tally total donation amounts that they have sought from family, friends, and other school supporters. "Race for Education" funds were used last year to buy Apple televisions for 25 classrooms, along with the purchase of student prizes. This year, the goal is to raise enough money to finance support devices for teacher aides, K-8 digital curriculum, such as IXL.com, and other technological accessories for classroom enhancement.
Incentive awards for the students include a $100 Toys "R" Us gift certificate, with one lottery ticket per family for every $100 raised; a party for the class raising the most funds, and $10 in "Chamber Bucks" for the top earning student in each grade level. There will also be "balloon pops," in which the balloons will be filled with varying amounts of money. For every $50 raised, each family member can receive one balloon pop, and for each student who runs more than 16 laps, they can earn one pop as well.
The schedule of times when each class will be running is posted below, for those who would like to see their special runners participate:
