OBIT: Joseph Farkas

MISHAWAKA - Joseph Farkas, 84 years old, residing in Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away Tuesday morning, May 31, 2016, at Hospice House, South Bend, Indiana. Joe was a bricklayer with Bricklayers, Local #4 - IN/KY for 62 years, serving as Business Manager and Secretary / Treasurer from 1990 until his retirement in 2000.

Joe was born on October 26, 1931, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Joseph Farkas, Sr. and Thelma Rynearson Farkas, and remained a lifelong resident. On June 14, 1952, in Mishawaka, Indiana, Joe was united in marriage to Charleen (Gardner) Farkas. She preceded him in death in June 1995. 

Joe is survived by five children, JoEllen (Joseph) Lach of Bremen, Debby (Frank) Umbaugh of Osceola, Tammy (Bill) Langdon of Palmetto Bay, Florida, Mike Farkas of Lakeville and Dennis (Christie) Farkas of Mishawaka; nine grandchildren: Timothy (Katie) Umbaugh, Patrick Umbaugh, Ryan Farkas, Chadwick Farkas, Peni Nichole Farkas, Phillip Langdon, Kirsten Langdon, Brooke Nowicki, Alivia Farkas; & granddaughter-in-law, Gretchen Love Lach; along with six great-grandchildren: Andrew Umbaugh, Matthew Umbaugh, Molly Umbaugh, Zoey Lach, Elias Jackson Lach, Emma Farkas, and two more on the way. Sister, Vicki (John) Acito of South Bend, and brother, Richard Farkas of Davenport, FL, along with many nieces and nephews.

Joseph was preceded in death by his daughter, Peni Lee; two grandchildren: Eric Lach and Jaxston Farkas; and sisters: Doris Jean Youngs and Beverly Kovacs.

Joe loved his family with all his heart and was so very proud of his large family. He was also a huge Chicago Cubs and Notre Dame fan.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his caregivers at Sprenger Assisted Living who loved him and treated him like family. Also to Hospice House of South Bend who cared for him in his final days.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN. Rev. Greg Crump will officiate. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery, Mishawaka, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 AM until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.
